PICPA NegOr’s Q2 GMM and Christmas Party

The PICPA NegOr Chapter alive with cheer and nostalgia as the Chapter gathered for its vibrant 2nd Quarter General Membership Meeting and Christmas Party on December 8, 2023, held at the Royal Suites Inn. The event welcomed the enthusiastic participation of PICPA Negros Oriental members, embracing the lively theme of "Flashback Friday."


One of the highlights of the meeting was the President’s Report delivered by incumbent Chapter President Rovelen Visor. 

President Visor’s address not only highlighted the chapter’s accomplishments but also articulated the future endeavors and strategies envisioned to propel the chapter to new heights in the coming year.


Following this, Treasurer Mary Vanessa Paltingca presented the Treasurer’s report, showing the chapter's financial standing and fiscal management, ensuring transparency and accountability among the members.


A heartwarming segment added depth to the event, where donations were received for an upcoming Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity aimed at supporting Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). Envelopes were provided, allowing attendees to contribute cash donations, symbolically hanging them on a small Christmas tree. 


Transitioning from the formalities, the Christmas Party exuded exuberance with a range of exciting activities. The Chapter's very own pool of talents, the "EVR Groovers," set the stage ablaze with a captivating dance number, that was showcased during the 78th PICPA Annual National Convention held at Sorsogon City last November 22-25, 2023.


The merriment continued with engaging games and electrifying raffles that kept the energy high and spirits soaring. Attendees relished a delectable dinner, exchanged heartfelt gifts, and reveled in the joy of fellowship.

PICPA EVR, VGAO, and Negros Oriental Chapter Join Hands for a Heartfelt Initiative

On October 19, 2023, a heartwarming joint initiative took flight as the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) Eastern Visayas Region (EVR), PICPA Visayas Geographical Area (VGAO), and the PICPA Negros Oriental Chapter came together for a noble cause. This collaborative effort aimed to bring joy and support to the students of the West City Exceptional Child Learning Center through a feeding program and the donation of a 65-inch TV.

The West City Exceptional Child Learning Center, a haven for more than 150 children with special needs – including those who are deaf, mute, blind, and those facing various mental and physical challenges – received the heartfelt attention of these esteemed organizations.

Among those who graced the event were distinguished figures within the PICPA community. PICPA EVR Regional Directors Sugar Sagarino and Aileen 


Maglana, along with the notable presence of PICPA Negros Oriental Chapter President Rovelen Visor, past presidents Paulino Sechico, Marylou Tan, Mariant Morales, Natalie Ermina, and Committee Chair on Fellowship and Sports Theresa MMC Credo, lent their support to this philanthropic endeavor.


Moreover, the highlight of the day was the generous donation of a 65-inch TV, aimed at enhancing the learning and recreational experiences of the children. This thoughtful gift promised to enrich their educational journey and provide moments of entertainment and learning beyond the confines of their challenges.


PICPA NegOR Hosts Q1 GMM

October 19, 2023

The Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) Negros Oriental Chapter had its 1st Quarter General Membership Meeting on October 19, 2023, held at C&L Bayview Hotel. This significant event gathered the members of PICPA Negros Oriental, graced by the special presence of PICPA EVR Regional Directors Sugar Sagarino and Aileen Maglana.


One of the main highlights of the meeting was the President’s Report by the PICPA Negros Oriental President, Rovelen Visor. President Visor's address not only outlined the accomplishments of the chapter but also set the tone for the future objectives and initiatives.


Subsequently, the assistant treasurer, PG Olivier Bulfa, presented a comprehensive Treasurer's report. This detailed financial overview provided transparency and accountability, showcasing the management of resources by the chapter. In addition, an array of significant announcements from the PICPA EVR added depth to the meeting, highlighting collaborative efforts and regional updates.


One of the segments of the event was the induction of new members into the PICPA Negros Oriental family. The induction ceremony symbolized a significant milestone, welcoming fresh talent and expertise into the esteemed fold of the organization.


While the meeting touched upon essential agenda items, it also provided an opportunity for enjoyment. Raffles and engaging games added a delightful touch to the proceedings, creating an atmosphere of fun and excitement among the attendees.

PICPA NegOR Chapter: Essential Partners in Buglasan Festival 2023

The Buglasan Festival is a yearly celebration in Negros Oriental, Philippines, showcasing the region's diverse culture. In 2023, the festival dazzled attendees with a variety of events and competitions. Behind the scenes, the Provincial Accountant’s Office, along with volunteers from PICPA Negros Oriental Chapter, played a crucial role as official tabulators, ensuring fairness and accuracy in the festival's competitions.

The Buglasan Festival 2023 spanned from September 24, 2023, with the "Gandang NegOrense Press Con," to October 22, 2023, with the crowning of "Hari ng Negros 2023." During this period, a range of competitions took place, including beauty pageants like Gandang NegOrense and Miss Negros Oriental, as well as various dance, singing, and fitness contests.


The volunteers from PICPA Negros Oriental Chapter displayed remarkable dedication, often working late nights to ensure the accuracy of the competition results. Their commitment and hard work contributed significantly to the smooth execution and credibility of the festival's competitive events. Their dedication to fairness and precision was evident throughout the festival.

The Buglasan Festival 2023 once again highlighted Negros Oriental's vibrant culture. The collaboration between the Provincial Accountant’s Office and the volunteers from PICPA Negros Oriental Chapter played a vital role in ensuring the success and integrity of this cultural celebration.

Exploring the Success of the 78th PICPA Annual Convention in Sorsogon City

Introduction


The 78th Annual Convention of the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) buzzed excitedly, carrying the theme "Beyond Numbers: Redefining the Roles of CPAs" in the charming city of Sorsogon. From November 22 to 25, 2023, around 6,000 CPAs nationwide gathered to share insights and connect. Sorsogon Province, known for its natural beauty and friendly vibe, provided the perfect environment for attendees to mingle, network, learn, and exchange ideas.


           The journey for the PICPA Negros Oriental team began as they left Dumaguete for Sorsogon City. Over 50 delegates representing different sectors of PICPA Negros Oriental made the trip. Some arrived a day or two early, with a few exploring Legaspi and Sorsogon before the convention kicked off. Following an over-eight-hour journey and encountering unfavorable weather conditions upon reaching Daraga, Bicol Airport, the group dispersed to various hotels in Sorsogon City, Legaspi City, or even certain municipalities within Sorsogon Province, which were roughly an hour's drive from the convention site. Despite these considerations, their enthusiasm remained undiminished. Everyone was thrilled to be present and excited about the conference, fostering a collective enthusiasm for what lay ahead.


Day 1 – November 22, 2023


           The 78th PICPA Annual Convention kicked off with an exciting start on November 22, 2023, in the charming city of Sorsogon. From 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, participants were greeted with a unified registration process at the Sorsogon City Sports Complex, setting the stage for a day of collaborative exploration. Simultaneously, at the Sorsogon Provincial Gymn, participants proceeded into learning about business opportunities after finishing their registration. Three insightful sessions featured speakers like Ms. Maricar Veloso from QNE Software Philippines, Inc., Mr. Miguel Antonio S. Lido from BNI Philippines, and Mr. Howell Mabalot of HVM Training Services. They shared their expertise in artificial intelligence, wealth creation, and effective project management.


 Amidst the exciting exchange of ideas, the Sportsfest brought a friendly competition vibe to Sorsogon. Venues hosted activities like Lawn and Table Tennis, a Mobile Legends tournament at the SM City Activity Area, and a Chess Tournament at the Sorsogon State University Library. Meanwhile, attendees could explore the city's culture through a City Tour and join a lively Motorcade. The day peaked with the students' conference via Zoom, allowing aspiring accountants to interact with industry leaders, engage in career talks, and pose questions to Hon. Noe G. Quiñanola, the Chairman of the Board of Accountancy. A Committee meeting, a Press Conference, and the Chapter Presidents' Meeting showcased the convention's varied impact.

           

           As the sun set, the convention's energy smoothly transitioned into the Chapter Presidents' Night at the Villa Isabela Hotel. Amidst lively conversations and shared experiences, they strengthened connections among PICPA chapter leaders that night. On Day 1, participants achieved a perfect blend of professional growth, sportsmanship, and cultural exploration, setting an optimistic tone for the following convention days. The 78th PICPA Annual Convention in Sorsogon emerged as a dynamic platform where accountants expanded their knowledge and built lasting connections, ensuring a rewarding experience for all participants.

Day 2: November 23, 2023  

    

           In the morning, technical sessions unfolded across sectors at various venues in Sorsogon. Commerce and Industry sessions occurred at Sorsogon State University's Social Hall, Education at the Sorsogon Cultural Center for Arts, Public Practice at the Sorsogon Provincial Gym, and Government at the Sorsogon Convention Center. Technical Session 1, which featured speakers like Dr. Ma. Concepcion Y. Lupisan and Dr. Arnel Onesimo O. Uy, highlighted the identification of necessary skills and suggested strategies for academic integration. Following this, Technical Session 2 featured discussions led by speakers such as Hon. Ma. Teresita Z. Dimaculangan and Hon. Gloria T. Baysa, evaluating the global status of Filipino CPAs and government regulatory roles.

 

          In the afternoon at the Sorsogon Convention Center, an impactful series of events unfolded, beginning with an opening plenary that included a Holy Mass and a main session featuring Atty. Sara Z. Duterte discusses the pivotal role of professional accountants in nation-building. The cornerstone of this segment was the enlightening Technical Session 3 led by Dato' Lock Peng Kuan, Managing Partner in Audit and Assurance at Baker Tilly Malaysia and Vice Chair of the Audit Committee. This session aimed to deepen participants' awareness of the evolving global business landscape, particularly the transformations in the practice of the accounting profession. It underscored the importance of staying abreast of these changes and fostering a proactive willingness among CPAs to embrace evolving workplace trends. The technical sessions served as a beacon, guiding participants towards a strategic positioning that enhances their efficiency and effectiveness in an ever-changing professional landscape.


In the evening, the spotlight shifted to the much-anticipated Mr. and Ms. PICPA 2023 pageant, held at the Sorsogon Convention Center. Participants from diverse regions, including Northern Luzon, Bicol, Southern Tagalog, Metro Manila, Northern Mindanao, Eastern Visayas, Central Luzon, and Southern Mindanao, showcased not only their professional prowess but also the elegance and poise inherent in the accounting profession. Lemuel Rosos of Limerick Events and Production directed the pageant, which offered a distinctive platform to honor the aesthetic grace and charm of CPAs. Notably, the Eastern Visayas Region emerged victorious, securing prestigious titles such as Mr. and Ms. PICPA 2023, Best in Closed Door Interview (male and female), Best in Resort Wear (male), and Best in Production Number (male). This event segment offered a captivating blend of glamour and professionalism, adding a vibrant and celebratory dimension to the gathering.


           In conclusion, the day's diverse events, including the sequential technical sessions, the insightful afternoon plenary, and the enchanting Mr. and Ms. PICPA 2023 pageant, collectively contributed to a dynamic and enriching experience. The technical sessions offered a platform for knowledge exchange and professional growth, providing participants with valuable insights into the future of the accountancy profession. The afternoon plenary highlighted the evolving business landscape and the strategic positioning of CPAs within it. Meanwhile, the pageant brought a touch of glamour to the occasion, showcasing the beauty, elegance, and poise of CPAs from different regions. This comprehensive program advanced the accountancy profession and fostered a sense of unity and celebration, reflecting the multifaceted nature of the accounting community. 


Day 3: November 24, 2023


           The convention's third day marked a memorable moment as we kicked off an exciting day filled with opportunities for learning and connection. The session promised an array of insights tailored to various fields of the accountancy profession, covering commerce and industry, government, public practice, and education. Expert speakers shared topics on AI, generational shifts, sustainability, and good governance. As participants, we gained valuable knowledge, fostered professional growth, and built meaningful daily connections. We seized the opportunity for exploration and discovery as we navigated the dynamic landscape of the accounting profession.


           Various sectoral forums were held in the morning, each featuring insightful technical sessions, and at Sorsogon State University's Social Hall, Commerce and Industry sessions had their Technical Session 4 on "Good Governance, Risk Management, and Integrity in the Age of AI" with Atty. Eric R. Recalde, a partner at ACCRALAW and chairman of the PICPA Board of Ethics, was the session's speaker. Meanwhile, government sector sessions at the Sorsogon Convention Center covered Technical Session 4, where Atty. Roland Café Pondoc, Commissioner of the Commission on Audit, discussed "Updated Guidelines for the Prevention and Disallowance of Irregular, Unnecessary, Excessive, Extravagant, and Unconscionable Expenditures." These sessions shed light on the evolving landscape's crucial governance, risk management, and integrity aspects.


Simultaneously, Public Practice sessions at the Sorsogon Provincial Gym featured Technical Session 4, with Mr. Wilson P. Tan, Chairman of SGV and Company, as the speaker, who explored the "Sustainability Reporting Landscape in the Philippines." Education sector discussions at Sorsogon Cultural Center for the Arts included Technical Session 4, where Mr. Joselito G. Diga, Senior VP for Finance and Group CFO at UniLab, addressed the "Challenges of Managing and Engaging Multi-generational Workforce." These sessions provided valuable insights into sustainability reporting and the dynamics of managing diverse workforces.


           Throughout the day, participants engaged with speakers such as Atty. Joseph C. Sorrera-Ty, Commissioner of the Legal Education Board, shared insights on "Good Governance, Risk Management, and Integrity in the Age of AI" across different sectors. Mr. Roderick M. Danao, Chairman and Senior Partner at PWC Philippines, contributed to discussions on generational shifts with sessions titled "Understanding Gen Z and Getting Ready for Gen Alpha: Bridging Going Beyond Gap." Moreover, speakers like Ms. Sharon G. Dayoan, Chairman and CEO of KPMG Philippines, and Mr. Romualdo V. Murcia III, President and CEO of P&A Grant Thornton, explored the role of CPAs as catalysts for sustainability.


 Added to the excitement of the convention participants was the awarding of the outstanding PICPA chapters and presidents.  Our PICPA Negros Oriental Chapter received the Outstanding Chapter Award, and Past President Mariant Morales was honored with the Outstanding Chapter President Award.  


           Continuing the excitement from the convention, the night event at Sorsogon Convention Center showcased a regional presentation featuring contributions from various regions, including Northern Luzon, Bicol, Southern Tagalog, Metro Manila, Northern Mindanao, Eastern Visayas, Central Luzon, and Southern Mindanao. The highlight of the evening was the 78th PICPA ANC P-Pop Con 2023 Pinoy Dance Showdown, where the SGV Dance Company (SGVDC), representing the PICPA Metro Manila Region (MMR), emerged as champions.

Day 4: November 25, 2023


           On November 25, the Sorsogon Convention Center hosted a series of technical sessions during the last half-day plenary, commencing with an Economic Briefing by Mr. Michael Ricafort, Vice President of the Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation. His insights gave attendees a comprehensive understanding of current financial trends, offering valuable perspectives for accounting professionals.


After that, attendees heard from prominent personnel in different government offices. Hon. Eli M. Remolona, the head of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, shared what's new in the financial world in a BSP Briefing session. Then, Atty Rome D. Lumagui, Jr. from the Bureau of Internal Revenue, and Hon. Emilio B. Aquino, the boss at the Securities and Exchange Commission, talked about essential updates in their areas. 

          

 We also got the scoop on the latest in accounting from Hon. Noe G. Quiñanola, who leads the Board of Accountancy. He shared valuable updates and insights for all of us bean counters. To wrap things up, we had a Roundtable Discussion led by Mr. Christian G. Lauron from SGV and Company. It was like a friendly chat where everyone shared ideas and learned from each other. These talks, starting with the Economic Briefing, made sure we all left with a good grip on what's happening with money, rules, and the accounting world.

 

A Vibrant Tapestry of Learning, Unity, and Growth Indeed!


           In the picturesque city of Sorsogon, the 78th Annual Convention of the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) unfolded with vibrancy and purpose, encapsulating the theme "Beyond Numbers: Redefining the Roles of CPAs." Over four days, approximately 6,000 CPAs converged to share insights, foster connections, and delve into the diverse facets of the accountancy profession. The convention was a resounding success, blending technical sessions, plenaries, and the glamour of the Mr. and Ms. PICPA 2023 pageant.


Beyond the enriching professional discussion, the event fostered camaraderie and friendship among participants. As accountants from various regions engaged in collaborative learning and shared experiences, the convention became a melting pot of ideas and a platform for building lasting connections. PICPA Negros Oriental played an active role, receiving accolades for their Outstanding Chapter Award and the Outstanding Chapter President Award.


As the convention ended, PICPA Negros Oriental expressed eagerness for the next PICPA Annual National Convention, anticipating another opportunity for knowledge exchange, camaraderie, and professional growth. The dynamic and multifaceted nature of the 78th PICPA ANC expanded the participants' understanding of the evolving business landscape and left a lasting impact on unity, celebration, and continuous learning within the PICPA community.

PICPA NegOr Spreads Cheer with Gift Giving to PWDs of Barangay Pulantubig, Dumaguete City

In a heartwarming gesture of compassion and goodwill, the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) Negros Oriental Chapter extended its hand to bring joy to more than 30 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) of Barangay Pulantubig, Dumaguete City on December 29, 2023.


PICPA Negros Oriental thoughtfully provided Christmas grocery items as gifts. The presence of Barangay Captain Ramil Cornelia and PWD President Antonio Seroma added significance to the event, reflecting the unity and cooperation between local governance and community organizations in creating meaningful initiatives.

The Gift Giving to PWDs of Barangay Pulantubig, Dumaguete City, was not merely a charitable act but a poignant reminder of the power of collective kindness and the joy found in giving.
